How to Choose the Right Vitamin C Serum: An Esthetician's Guide
Vitamin C is one of the most researched ingredients in skincare, and one of the most confusing to shop for. Different forms, strengths and textures all claim the same thing: brighter, more even, better-protected skin. Here is how our estheticians help clients choose.
What vitamin C actually does
Vitamin C is an antioxidant. Applied in the morning under sunscreen, it helps neutralize free radicals from UV and pollution, which are a major cause of dullness, dark spots and early fine lines. Over time, a well-formulated vitamin C serum supports a brighter, more even-looking complexion and firmer-looking skin.
1. Match the formula to your skin type
- Normal, dry or mature skin: a classic L-ascorbic acid serum with vitamin E and ferulic acid, like SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic, gives the strongest everyday antioxidant protection.
- Oily or blemish-prone skin: look for a lighter formula designed for congestion, such as SkinCeuticals Silymarin CF.
- Uneven tone and dark spots: SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF pairs vitamin C with phloretin to target discoloration.
- Sensitive or first-time users: start gentler, for example Vivier Serum 10, then step up to Vivier Serum 30 once your skin is comfortable.

2. Understand the strength
Higher is not always better. Many people do best starting around 10 to 15% and moving up only if their skin tolerates it. A little tingling at first can be normal; lasting redness or stinging is a sign to drop down or alternate days.
3. Texture and routine matter
Prefer something lighter or prefer a cream? Try Dermalogica Biolumin-C Serum, G.M. Collin Vital C15 or Yon-Ka Serum C20. Apply vitamin C on clean, dry skin in the morning, follow with moisturizer, and always finish with SPF.
4. Store it well
Vitamin C is sensitive to light and air. Keep the cap closed, store away from heat and sunlight, and use the bottle within a few months of opening.
